XL Test Card

ARINC 818, High-Speed, Sensor & Mission System Test Platform

ARINC 818 Mission System XL Card

COTS VERSION UNDER DEVELOPMENT

The XL test cards are customized by GRT for your avionics and mission test requirements. Based on a standard-sized PCIe plug-in card and built around an AMD Kintex Ultrascale Plus FPGA, this new generation of ARINC 818 card reaches link rates of 28.05 Gbps.

The card was developed to support state-of-the-art video-based (IR and optical sensor) avionics and mission systems by including features for testing complex systems such as, video concentration and deconcentration, stereo sensors, stereo displays, video frame rate conversion, and color space conversion.

Created to work in unison with up to five cards simultaneously and coupled with both powerful test software and a scripting language for designing and automating complex test scenarios, the XL card provides ample capability to test the most demanding sensor-based mission systems for engineering validation, product qualification, production testing, and field maintenance.

XL cards are capable of both testing and emulating high-speed video-based sensor, camera, and display systems.

Example Mission System

ARINC 818 Mission System Example

This example shows sensors, cameras, video processors, video switches, and displays integrated together in a tightly-coupled attack helicopter mission system. XL cards, when used with the powerful test software, are able to emulate or test all the video-based avionics and mission systems shown in this example.

Customization Options

Defining Modes

Software controlled operational modes can be created for the XL card to meet the challenges of a large number of test groups and test cases that must be supported, including synchronizing multiple XL cards together.

Video Concentration/

Deconcentration

The XL card can concentrate as well as deconcentrate 3 video streams distinguished by a Source ID on a single link, these can be stored in memory for video recording.

Stereo Sensors & Displays

Stereo displays require synchronized inputs. When channel skew is introduced, it causes pilot/operator nausea, rendering them unable to complete their mission. The XL card has to have the ability to perfectly align each channel (right/left eye), but also introduce skew between the channels in measurable increments for system validation.

Visualization of Different Pixel Types

The XL card can be customized to convert between mono, RGB, YCbCr, and Bayer pixels, with the processing power to do video rate conversions. Converting between pixel types is referred to as color space conversion. Modern avionics and mission systems (sensors, processors, displays) include many different pixel types and update rates, making ARINC 818 an excellent choice for processing color space and video rate conversions.

Data-Only Links for Command and Control

The protocol also includes provisions for transmitting data-only (no video) for applications where ARINC 818 is used as a command-and-control (C&C) link, or for feedback (such as touch screen coordinates on a display). Cameras and sensors typically require set-up and configuration, such as zoom, calibration, or contrast adjustments. The XL card can be customized to test and emulate a variety of video-based LRUs but also data-only C&C reception and transmission.

Robustness Testing & Error Injection

GRT can customize our XL card for your requirements, including robustness testing and error injection. Features can include video timing variations, both line timing and frame timing; adjustable channel skew for 3D displays; gain and offset adjustments for displaying high-resolution sensors at the low end of the dynamic range, and finally, error injection for parameters such as the calculated cyclic redundancy check in each ARINC 818 video packet.

XL For Your Demanding Application

The COTS XL Card is customized and factory-configured to meet the demands of complex systems, such as the RVS 2.0 system developed by Collins Aerospace and Boeing.
